Club Update on Covid-19 from Canterbury Hockey

Please see the below announcement from the CEO of Canterbury Hockey…

Dear Club Presidents and Secretaries and Schools

This afternoon we have received advice from Hockey New Zealand which gives us directives that are to be implemented immediately. The full media advisory given can be read here.

The advice given directs that all community hockey events, competitions, practices, matches, trials, programmes, tournaments, workshops and social competitions, currently in progress, must be postponed until Saturday 2 May at the earliest.

This advice has impact on our planned programmes especially in the months of March and April. The following events are impacted and, at present, are being postponed:

  • All coaching workshops scheduled to be held in March and April – including

o    Open Grade Workshop DEFENCE scheduled for 26 March;

o    Coach Developer Introduction Workshop scheduled for 23 March;

o    Open Grade Workshop ATTACK scheduled for 19 April.

  • U18 Trials – scheduled for Monday 27 April and Thursday 30 April

In addition to the events above, the following is being cancelled:

  • Summer Hockey – Monday/Tuesday w/c 23 April
  • Summer Hockey Mixed 11-aside
  • ORIX NZ Canterbury Sports Awards Friday 3 April
  • Junior Super 6 Tournament scheduled April 22 – 24. We may look at rescheduling this to be delivered at a later date
  • Hockey Accelerators Under 18 Advanced Programme scheduled for March 26 and 30 and April 2 and 6
  • Delivery of Small Sticks into schools

All of our member clubs/school are affiliated to Canterbury Hockey so must follow this advisement.

If any clubs are currently running social leagues, these must cease immediately.

You will appreciate that this information has only been received this afternoon and that we are trying to communicate to you as quickly and thoroughly as possible. We will now work on re-arranging our year to fit in the above postponements.

The health and wellbeing of our hockey community is our top priority and we ask that those clubs and schools who own their own turfs and have access to turfs not currently owned by Christchurch City Council or CAST, also strongly adhere to and abide by these restrictions. Nunweek Park Hockey Turfs and Nga Puna Wai Hockey Turfs will also be closed to the Canterbury Hockey Association, effective from end of play tonight.

Canterbury Hockey staff will continue to work either from home or the office, depending on the advice of the Ministry of Health and already scheduled community or Committee meetings will proceed as planned either by phone or video conferencing. Our team will be in touch with those directly affected to make alternative arrangements.

What I would like to reassure you of however, is that the Canterbury Hockey Board met last night to discuss these imminent announcements and as such, made the decision that the financial viability of our clubs is of top priority. We have already begun discussions with Christchurch City Council, CAST and Hockey NZ around timings of, and commitments to, payment of turf fees and affiliation fees. I would like to assure you that until we have more certainty around how the 2020 season will look, Canterbury Hockey will not be sending out invoices to clubs or schools for costs associated with turf hire for practices or matches, umpire fees, affiliation fees or turf replacement fees.

Also, be aware that new advisements can be delivered at short warning as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to evolve. I think we are all getting very used to being flexible in Canterbury and this is another of those occasions.

We appreciate that this is some variability in the directives given across the sporting codes but we will support the stance that Hockey NZ has taken at this time, to be vigilant and support the public health messages of social distancing.

Keep safe everyone – keep washing those hands, doing the elbow bumps but also try to keep physically active – it helps keep us mentally well!

We will continue to provide regular updates and advisements through our Facebook page, website and directly via email to Clubs and School Secretaries and Presidents.

Kind regards, Emma
