Grade Prescriptions

Hockey NZ have released the Small Sticks junior programme, which includes videos imbedded in to the pages. To view the programme, click here. This is an excellent resource for guidance.

Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) and the Junior Committee committed aligning CHA Junior Competitions to the Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) Small Sticks competition structure as part of a national development strategy in 2014. The transition plan started in 2014 with the initial intention being to complete the full Small Sticks alignment in 2016. A summary of the Junior Competition grades and the key changes for the coming season follows:

PLEASE NOTE JUNIOR GRADES ARE BASED ON THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

Fun Sticks (Year 1 & 2)
Developed by HNZ, Fun Sticks is a club driven program that teaches basic skills and has a game component. The Fun Sticks program is the preferred pathway for players of this age.

Mini Sticks (Year 3 and 4)
No trials are held for this grade. Registrations must be received on or before the registration days to be advised in due course on the website.

Kiwi Sticks (Year 5 and 6)
No trials are held for this grade. Registrations must be received on or before the registration days to be advised in due course on the website.

The Small Sticks structure requires players to stay within their year bands – i.e. Fun Sticks Years 1 -2, Mini Sticks 3-4, Kiwi Sticks 5-6, and Kwik Sticks 7-8.

Kiwi sticks is for School Year 5 and 6 only.

The rules for Kiwi Sticks are fundamentally the same as the old Super 8, as is the Grade prescription requirements in terms of youth umpires and goalkeepers. Dispensation for field players from one team within a club or school to fill in as a goalkeeper in a second team may be available.

ALL YEAR 7 AND 8 PLAYERS MUST ATTEND TRIALS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE BELOW TEAMS – Trial dates will be advised on the website once these have been confirmed.

Kwik Sticks 6 aside (Year 7 and 8)
This grade is for new and/or developing players. Rules will be the same as Kiwi Sticks, except there will be no requirement for goalkeepers or youth umpires and scheduling will be mindful of Holiday weekends.

Kwik Sticks 11 aside (Year 7 and 8)
NO Year 6 players are allowed in this grade. They must play Kiwi Sticks.

Teams in this grade are graded by ability and the club holds trials for this grade. Other changes to the grade prescriptions that are important to note:

The Year 8 transfer rule will remain in place and will be supported with the reinstatement of the Representative Player transfer rule (players must compete for the team they achieved Representative honours).

More detailed grade prescriptions as below…

These will be updated for the 2020 season once they have been received from CHA.
