Junior Grade Prescriptions

Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) and the Junior Committee, committed aligning CHA Junior Competitions to the Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) Small Sticks competition structure as part of a national development strategy in 2014. A summary of the Junior Competition grades follows:

The Small Sticks structure requires players to stay within their year bands – i.e. Fun Sticks Years 1 -2, Mini Sticks 3-4, Kiwi Sticks 5-6, and Kwik Sticks 7-8.


PLEASE NOTE JUNIOR GRADES ARE BASED ON THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

Fun Sticks (Year 1 & 2)
Developed by HNZ, Fun Sticks is a club driven program that teaches basic skills and has a game component. The Fun Sticks program is the preferred pathway for players of this age.

Mini Sticks (Year 3 and 4)
No trials are held for this grade. Registrations must be received on or before the registration days to be advised in due course on the website.

Kiwi Sticks (Year 5 and 6)
No trials are held for this grade. Registrations must be received on or before the registration days to be advised in due course on the website.

Dispensation for field players from one team within a club or school to fill in as a goalkeeper in a second team may be available.

Kwik Sticks (Year 7 and 8)
All year 7 & 8 players now play in a 7-aside format.

Trials are held for this grade Registrations must be received on or before the registration days to be advised in due course on the website.
